After our last post providing a ‘work-around’ to find the download link of your files, we had a lot of feedback. Since the launch of our service, people have asked for a direct download link to make sharing the package even easier. From today, we do!

Nothing fancy, but after a quick talk with our legal guys we decided to give it a go. From now on, we provide a download link (shortened with a wtrns.fr url) which directs people immediately to the download site.

We still take good care of your files, only now you can share them quicker, easier and faster. That’s how we roll.

With WeTransfer we’re happy to transfer your files quick and safely for you and yours. As you know, you can send your message with files up to 20 email addresses at one time. Or forward the package again, to as many people as you want, after uploading.

For obvious reasons, we don’t communicate the download link to your files. We’re in the file-transfer business, not the hosting business. Still, it’s possible to get those ‘hidden‘ download links and share your files even quicker.

It’s also very easy to find this download link. If you receive your email with the upload confirmation or download information, there’s this download button which contains the valuable link that’s the entrance to your files. With a simple ‘right click’ on the image (or text) you can copy the link which will look like this:

Of course, this link is way too long for a proper tweet. That’s why we like services like bit.ly to shorten URL’s. Either way, we thought it was worth mentioning. If you feel like spreading your portfolio, a new mixtape or any other type of file this could be very helpful. We’re just saying…

Anyone who spends a lot of time online will have used a file sharing service to send large files to friends or colleagues, or maybe even to download a music track or two. While functional (and free), those services aren’t harbingers of style or user-friendliness, bombarding users with off-target banners and frequent prompts to upgrade to premium services. Which is why Dutch startup WeTransfer thinks there’s money to be made by offering a more appealing alternative.

WeTransfer’s feature list isn’t unusual: it’s free and allows users to send big files (up to 2 GB) without registering. Files are available for two weeks, and can be transferred to up to twenty people. The main difference with other online file transfer services is WeTransfer’s approach to design and sponsorship. Like its competitors, the company relies on advertising for revenues. But instead of running questionable banner ads, WeTransfer sells wallpaper advertising—those pretty pictures in the background. Since WeTransfer’s own interface is minimal, that leaves a lot of space for a sponsor’s brand. (The screenshot above shows a wallpaper for Blyk, the mobile network operator we’ve written about in the past.) In addition to buying wallpaper space on WeTransfer’s main site, companies can also sponsor their own channels—Blyk, for example, can send its audience to blyk.wetransfer.com.

No stranger to this flavour of online advertising, one of WeTransfer’s founders is lifestyle and music blogger Nalden, whose design-heavy nalden.net has sold wallpaper space to brands like Nike, Vodafone and Apple. The lesson here? Take an existing service, make it more enticing for consumers and, with a little coaxing, brands will follow. Oh, and don’t forget the free love!

While enjoying the view from our new office in San Francisco, we’re happy to share the fact WeTransfer has been selected as an Official Honoree for the Best Visual Design – Function category in The 14th Annual Webby Awards. In case you don’t know; the Webby’s are the Oscars of the web.

The Official Honoree distinction is awarded to the top 15% of all work entered that exhibits remarkable achievement. With nearly 10,000 entries received from all 50 states and over 60 countries, this is an outstanding accomplishment for the whole WeTransfer team and our design partners of Dolly Rogers.

Being listed next to Behance, Microsoft’s Bing, Nike+ and other big brands is not a bad start in our opinion. Either way we are just beginning and continue to improve the functional design and features of our service in the coming weeks. For now, let’s enjoy this moment…. cheers!

Our users were already enthusiastic about the service, but we have taken it to the next level.
We listened to all of the feedback over the past few months and created a bunch of useful new features:

• After uploading, you can download the files for yourself
• You can forward your files to anyone you forgot about without having to upload again
• If you transfer to an email address that doesn’t work, you will be notified
• When you upload a single file, it won’t be zipped anymore
• We have a fresh new email design now with more file details

Hey everybody! For the last couple of weeks we’ve been working on some very nice new features for our favourite file transferring service. Some of them are already implemented on the .com domain and some are still being tested at our super secret test bunker. For example,

• you now have better control over your contact history
• we have these sweet info pop-ups helping you out
• we made some technical improvements
• and prepared our servers to handle even more users.
